Polyester buttons made by Lozio ^®

Polyester buttons are quite a modern invention. On a national and international scale, these buttons first came into use in the period after the war. They are resistant to wear, dimensionally stable and have thermosetting properties that are particularly resistant, all of which meaning that they stand out for their versatility and ability to become convincing copies – in terms of feel and appearance – of mother of pearl, horn, corozo and tortoiseshell.

They are extremely widely used in the clothing industry and often, not even an expert manufacturer’s eye is able to tell the difference, on sight, between polyester and natural buttons.

Polyester buttons are the most widely used all over the world in the manufacture of industrially made clothing and they provide the perfect answer to different aesthetic and quality application needs. These buttons are made from a liquid polyester resin, mixed with other chemicals to be transformed into sheets or rods.

When the sheets are still not completely cooled and hard, they are cut into rounds of various sizes, which are then left to harden in water for up to 24 hours. At this point they are ready to be made into buttons using special machinery. Some equipment machines the buttons on one side, other equipment machines it on both sides at the same time, while other machines polish the buttons, and so forth, until the product is finished.

Polyester buttons can be dyed in two ways: “piece” dyed, i.e., soaked in vats of dye when already finished, or "paste" dyed, i.e., before the polyester is segmented into rounds and therefore, before it is made into actual buttons. Naturally, this second option is better suited to higher production quantities.

For the production of top-quality polyester buttons, it is necessary to take great care with the quality of the resins as well as of the dyes.  Until a few years ago, these buttons were used as imitation mother of pearl or horn, but today, thanks to increasingly new technology and to the fact that there are always new and innovative ideas in the fashion industry, polyester buttons are now used to imitate any kind of natural material, since they can be moulded to any style, shape, colour, thickness or size.
