The modern history of cover buttons begins in 1844, when Frenchman, Parent invented the button with a shank. It was immediately clear that from this time onwards, buttons no longer had to have holes and therefore, they could be covered in fabric to enhance them and give them a special style, since they would have been created with a special outfit in mind.

This meaning has continued with time and still today, cover buttons are a mark of tailored uniqueness. They are created around a core made from metal or another material. Cover buttons are made in two parts: the shank and the knob. The shank is the bottom part, with the eyelet that serves to fasten it to the garment, while the knob is the top part of the button, which is covered and given different names according to its shape: flat, curved or half ball.

Cover buttons are widely used in women’s fashion, and their mention is immediately synonymous with the elegance of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy, who made cover buttons the very emblem of class and being a lady. As far as men are concerned, this type of button is only used on clerical items and also for smoking jackets, although it has been traditionally used for men’s waistcoats.

Often they have an added metal ring nut and can also be double assembly or in other words, formed by two different fabrics.
